Learn to Play the 'Ukulele at Disney's Aulani Resort
There are so many things included in your stay at Disney’s Aulani Resort that really make it a special destination to visit and a great family destination! One of the popular activities offered at the resort is the opportunity to learn to play the ‘ukulele!
The ‘ukulele is widely known as one of the most popular instruments of the Hawaiian Islands and every tourist shop will have some variety of ukulele for sale. You can even purchase one at Disney’s Aulani Resort. However, during the 45-minute class onsite, you will be able to borrow one for your lesson. You may just fall in love with the instrument though and decide you want to take one home!
One of the things I really enjoyed about this class was that our teachers introduced us to a variety of instruments that were a big part of music in the Hawaiian history. I would never call myself a serious musician, maybe a hobbyist at best, but I had never heard of or seen a nose flute prior to this class. Our amazing teacher not only explained the importance in the Hawaiian culture but even showed us how it was played. My family agreed the nose flute wasn’t really our thing and we decided to stick with the ‘ukulele.
This 45-minute class fills up quickly, so you will want to make sure you sign up in advance. You can only sign up the day of the class at 8:00 AM at the Pau Hana Room onsite. There are typically several class times offered but the class is not offered every day. Pay close attention to the Daily Iwa for more information on the classes. You will also want to arrive for class 10 minutes prior to start to get a seat and get set up for class. There are often guests who are waitlisted for the class so if you are not on time, your seat may be given away.
After a fun introduction and some cool history of the Hawaiian culture and music, you’ll jump into an overview of how to hold and position the ‘ukulele. The class is a great family activity so even the younger members can participate and learn some basic information. As the class progresses, you will learn a few chords and how to play those chords in popular music. Keep practicing and before long, you will be picking up all sorts of songs from just a few basic chord combinations.
Learning an instrument sounds intimidating for a 45-minute class but this is a laid back and fun environment where you can experience something new and really learn about the culture of the area you are visiting. Spend some time around the resort and you will have plenty of time to experience the ‘ukulele. If you find some members of your family really take to it and enjoy the instrument, you may even be able to sign up for a second class later in the week!
A Disney Aulani vacation has so much to offer and you will find the cultural activities included in your stay will make your trip even more special than you could have ever imagined.
